The 2015 Toyota Tacoma will be the last of its generation

First, let us begin by saying that in no way are we implying that the new Chevy Colorado is a crappy truck. To the contrary; the 2015 Colorado has received quite the welcome from owners and critics alike. But perhaps the introduction of the new GM truck has whetted the country’s appetite for smaller trucks, because in the first month of sales for the Colorado, 2015 Toyota Tacoma sales increased 3.3% on a volume basis, and 7.4% on a daily sales rate basis. That’s quite the achievement for Toyota’s compact pickup, which has seen declining sales in previous months of this year.

Unlike the Chevy truck, the Tacoma was not restyled for 2015, despite fans hoping it would be. However, according to the Detroit Free Press, the Japanese automaker will debut a redesigned Toyota Tacoma at next month’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. This is interesting timing, as just yesterday, MotorTrend named the Colorado its Truck of the Year. Seems like Toyota has realized it’s time to step up the game, in spite of the sudden uptick in Tacoma sales.

Since the Taco hasn’t been fully updated since 2005 (although it saw minor tweaks in 2012), it’s high time Toyota changed up the truck. Given Americans’ disinterest in compact pickups in recent years, perhaps Toyota thought it could just ride the Tacoma wave without making any major changes for a while. But with the reintroduction of the Chevy Colorado, a redesigned Toyota Tacoma is just what the segment needs.

Next, we just need to see the Ford Ranger come back to America. Yeah, right.
