General Motors wants to remind everyone driving OnStar-equipped Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicles that they have easy access to Crisis Assist services in the event of an extreme weather emergency, particularly those living near the coastal regions of the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.

According to GM, 1.1 million OnStar customers live in those areas, which are 70% likely to be hit by between six to 11 storms in 2015. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, three to six of those storms could evolve into hurricanes.

“Staying informed and developing an emergency plan can make the biggest difference during a severe weather season,” said Mary Ann Adams, OnStar crisis incident manager. “Safety and security are at the foundation of our services and we are available to subscribers at any time with weather updates, traffic conditions, evacuation routes and to direct emergency services.”

To help you prepare, regardless of where you are, OnStar has come up with a Hurricane Preparation Checklist. This includes a Disaster Kit that contains items such as three gallons of water per person, a three-day supply of food, first aid kit and medications, emergency blanket, and copies of personal documents.

For property protection, recommended tips include taking photos of home and property before the storm, installing hurricane shutters or boarding the windows, and securing loose siding.

For evacuation, you’re advised to register with the Emergency Management Office if you have special needs, know the locations of shelters and evacuation areas, and use OnStar for further Assistance.
