Renault-Nissan Alliance Plans Driverless Car Sharing

Carlos GhosnTwo major trends seem to be dominating the world of cars these days – the push to self-driving cars and the growing demand for car sharing. The Renault-Nissan Alliance is reportedly working together to bring those two concepts together into one car sharing system that does not require human drivers.

Goldman Sachs recently estimated that the ride hailing market will grow eight times its current size by 2030, so it’s only natural that Nissan wants a piece of the growing pie. French and Japanese engineers are currently trying to design a system where you would pre-map your journey and call for a car, much like how Uber and Lyft work now. What remains unclear, though, is if these driverless cars would be able to think like a human and be able to avoid traffic. In urban centers like New York City and Los Angeles, this adaptability is essential.

There is still no word yet on when countries will become comfortable enough to allow cars to drive completely by themselves unoccupied, which we imagine is what would happen when a car has to go meet a passenger. There are so many unanswered questions surrounding a service like this, but since Nissan is one of the main manufacturers working on autonomous technology they are certainly equipped to do so.

According to Reuters, Nissan plans on having an autonomous car pay-per-ride service ready within the next 10 years. We’ll see how realistic that is as we get closer to self-driving cars taking over the roadway.
