Renault-Nissan Dominates Global Sales

Renault-Nissan AllianceWhen we talk about the top-selling global car brands, usually we are writing about Toyota, General Motors, and Volkswagen. However, the first half of 2017 saw a new leader emerge as king of vehicle sales: the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The group, which includes Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi, sold 5,268,079 vehicles in the period of January-June of 2017.

Before anyone gets upset and points out that the Renault-Nissan alliance covers multiple brands we would remind readers that General Motors also has several brands but it fell to fourth place overall with 4.7 million vehicles. Second place went to the Volkswagen AG and third fell to Nissan’s rival Toyota. Nissan by itself moved 2,894,488 million vehicles, while Renault sold 1,879,288. Mitsubishi, which is trying to recover after an efficiency scandal, sold 494,303 (which is still up 5.6%).

The Alliance contributes its success to the increased sales of Nissan models like the Rogue, Qashqai, and Sentra along with the Renault Clio, Sandero, and Megane. Besides traditional vehicles, the electric cars offered by the brands rose to 481,151 units, even after a major competitor was launched by Chevrolet.

Carlos Ghosn, chairman and chief executive of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, said: “The Alliance has delivered record sales during the first semester of 2017 reaching 5,268,079 vehicles sold. We will continue to leverage our significant economies of scale and global market presence to deliver valuable synergies for our member companies this year, while maintaining a strong technology lineup and offering customers breakthrough electric models.”

To be marginally fair to Nissan’s competitors, the sales race is very close in 2017 and it is still unclear if Nissan will retain this crown for the whole year. For now we encourage you to bow down and pay homage to the car world’s new leader.
