Report: 2018 Ford Mustang Will Not Offer V6 Engine Option
The iconic Ford Mustang may never be same.
For years this pony car was offered with a thunderous V8 engine that demanded everyone’s attention both at the drag strip and on the road. However, for buyers who couldn’t afford eight cylinders, Ford has offered a V6 which allowed the ‘Stang to find homes in more garages over the years. Now, though, it appears the days of a naturally-aspirated V6 are over.
According to Mustang6G, a dealership employee posted information from the 2018 Ford Mustang’s order guide on their forums and when the V6 body code was entered into the system, it was deemed invalid, which makes it appear the engine will not be offered. The 3.7-liter V6 is the standard engine for the current Mustang and it pumps out 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. However, this particular motor hasn’t been updated in a number of years.
Without a V6, that means the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder will become the Mustang’s new standard engine. Rated at 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, this motor provides more power than the V6 and it’s also more fuel efficient, yielding an EPA-estimated 30 mpg on the highway.
Other new equipment reportedly coming with the new Mustang includes the 10-speed automatic gearbox that Ford created with the help of General Motors. In addition, a dual exhaust is listed as an option, which could possibly be referring to the quad tips that were revealed in spy photos of the 2018 Mustang. Also offered with the new model will be MagneRide dampers. This equipment was formerly only available on the Shelby GT350, but for the ‘18 model it will be offered for both the EcoBoost and GT trims.
Ford also seems to be taking aim at the Camaro’s 1LE Performance package by offering a new “Performance Package 2” that sits above the already released GT Performance package. Furthermore, the 2018 Mustang will offer new exterior color options. These hues include Royal Crimson, Orange Fury, and Kona Blue.
All of these reported changes add more anticipation for the 2018 Mustang’s release, but Ford officials won’t disclose any official details about the 2018 model until it’s closer to the time of its scheduled debut.
