As the Cadillac brand continues to think of new ways to overcome rival Mercedes-Benz in yearly sales totals, it seems the American luxury automaker might seriously be considering a Chevrolet Cruze-based hatchback model.

GM Inside News reported that sources told its publication that Cadillac is designing a new premium vehicle that would use the innovative D2XX platform that has also been used for the 2016 Chevy Cruze compact sedan. This information is based on an internal program code D2JL that was reportedly seen at the Renn Center. The D stands for Delta, 2 meaning evolution or generation number, J standing for hatch, and L indicating Cadillac.

This rumored code does not entirely indicate whether the new model would be a typical hatchback or if it would feature the liftback design that was used with the 2017 Chevy Volt. Those sources also indicated that Cadillac expects a premium of $6,000 to 9,000 with the D2XX platform.

Additional sources reportedly told GM Inside News this Cadillac could come standard with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while higher-level models would feature a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor.

This rumored Cadillac hatchback would compete for sales with the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA coupe, which carries a starting MSRP of $32,050, making it the most affordable vehicle currently in the Mercedes-Benz lineup.

GM Authority previously reported that Cadillac mentioned at this year’s North American International Auto Show that its sedans are recognized as being rear-wheel drive vehicles, so while the D2XX platform has been significantly refined; it definitely was not created to support a rear-wheel driving system.
