Report: Future Toyota Camry to Get Turbo-Four
The Toyota Camry is one of the few mid-size sedans that hasn’t yet replaced its powerful V6 engine with a turbo-four, but rumor has it this will soon change.
A report in Automotive News stated that Toyota will join the turbocharged party in the coming years by replacing the Camry’s hefty V6 with a turbo-four, which will offer plenty of power while using less fuel.
The engine that’ll soon live under the Camry’s hood is the same engine that powers the Lexus NX200t, and was just announced for the upcoming 2016 Lexus IS200t.
The engine is capable of producing 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque via a continuously variable transmission in the NX. The current Camry’sV6 is good for 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque, so numbers are comparable. The turbo-four will definitely exceed the power of the Camry’s regular four-cylinder engine, which is rated at 178 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque.
The switch to the turbo-four could coincide with the Camry’s switch to Toyota’s TNGA platform, which would make it a 2018 model. Alternatively, the Japanese automaker could introduce the engine sooner to catch up with its competitors like the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Chevy Malibu, VW Passat, and soon the Honda Accord.
