Mercedes-Benz will not be releasing the X-Class pickup truck in the US

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup truck is expected to become available in late 2017

When Mercedes-Benz first revealed the X-Class midsize truck earlier this year, it set the internet ablaze with anticipation for this new premium pickup, but performance enthusiasts craving an AMG version shouldn’t hold their breath. That’s because Motoring has reported such a model is not currently in the company’s plans.

When Motoring chatted with AMG boss Tobias Moers at the LA Auto Show, Moers made it clear the company didn’t believe there was enough demand for an AMG truck to warrant the costs it would take to produce this vehicle.

That means the most powerful engine offered with the X-Class will be a turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V6 good for 255 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque. That motor will be complemented by a 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system, which helps the truck achieve a payload capacity of approximately 1.1 tons and trailering rating of 3.5 tons.

Those ratings seem plenty impressive for most truck buyers, but Mercedes doesn’t plan to offer the vehicle in the United States. Instead Nissan will manufacture the pickup on Mercedes’ behalf. The truck will be sold in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, and Argentina.

The X-Class will be offered in two distinct models as well. The Stylish Explorer will showcase the German automaker’s trademark styling cues and rich interiors, while the Powerful Adventurer will provide an off-road focus.

Mercedes plans to offer a number of optional equipment groups with the X-Class, so consumers can customize the truck to their specific tastes. In addition, Mercedes will produce accessories for the X-Class. These accessories are likely to include bed covers and other distinctive design elements.

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class will become available to non-US customers in the later part of 2017.
