For more than 60 years, the Chevrolet Corvette has come in rear-wheel drive and its engine has been mounted up front, but that could change in 2018, according to a new report from Car and Driver.

The automotive publication reported that, according to sources, the 2019 Chevy Corvette will come with a mid-engine format and could debut at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The same report also indicated the new eighth-generation Corvette will be powered by the current pushrod V8 engine, which could produce up to 500 horsepower.

Besides offering a new engine format, the C8 Corvette will also feature a price increase, with the base price likely starting at $80,000. That pricing adjustment would further differentiate the Corvette from the high-performance sixth-generation Camaro models.

Car and Driver also reports that an even more powerful C8 Corvette could make its debut in 2019. This version of the C8 would feature an all-new four-cam, 32-valve V8 motor and its price tag could exceed $100,000, putting it closer to the starting MSRPs of the Dodge Viper and Nissan GT-R. Furthermore, a hybrid E-Ray Corvette could also make its debut as soon as 2020. The E-Ray, which GM has already trademarked, would have electric motors powering the front-wheels and would come with all-wheel drive.

According to the report from Car and Driver, before GM officially introduces the new C8 Corvette, an even more powerful version of the C7 will make its debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. This rumored Corvette would slot above the high-performance Z06 model and could provide a final send-off for the front-engine Chevrolet Corvette.
