The Lincoln MKC is due to enter its second generation in 2020, but a report suggests that the final product will continue Lincoln’s trend of moving away from alphanumeric titles in favor of real names.

Automotive News reports that Lincoln dealers were informed in May that the MKC will become the 2021 Lincoln Corsair. Alongside the Lincoln Corsair, reps previewed the next-generation Ford Escape and Explorer, the Mach 1 electric performance crossover and smaller off-road SUV first teased earlier this year, and an updated version of the Lincoln Continental with suicide doors.

It’s noted that the Corsair could go by a different name by the time it enters production — likely in 2020 — though it is almost certain to move away from the MKC name. The Corsair name, which had previously been used for a Lincoln sedan in the Australian market, would fit alongside the nameplates Navigator, Aviator, and Nautilus with the shared theme of modes of travel.

The Corsair name was the name of a pirate ship and of a World War II fighter plane, and it is also the name of the leader of the Starjammers and father to Cyclops and Havok. Though it’s not likely that this would be Lincoln’s source of inspiration, one cannot say for certain.

The 2019 Lincoln MKC is expected to arrive on the market within the next few months. The mid-cycle refresh includes the new Lincoln Signature Grille, SYNC 3 as the standard infotainment system, and Lincoln Embrace.
