First 2015 Corvette Z06 Stingray Auction

As anticipated, Rick Hendrick, championship NASCAR team owner, placed the winning bid for the very first 2015 Corvette Z06 Stingray at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Collector Car Auction. In total, Hendrick dropped $1 million on the Stingray, all of which will benefit the Karmanos Cancer Institute, a charity that Chevrolet is often tied to.

Hendrick is no stranger to these charity auctions. Last year, he laid down $1 million each for the first 2014 Stingray coupe and the first 2014 Stingray convertible. More recently, he paid $650,000 for the very first 2014 Z/28 Camaro.

Reportedly, Hendrick has for a long time been active in supporting cancer research, partially because he himself once suffered from chronic myelogenous leukemia. Despite its high mortality rate, Hendrick pulled through, thanks to the results of the very type of research he is now funding with his donation.

“This is an easy one for me, because we do a lot with the cancer folks,” Hendrick told Fox Sports. “My life’s been spared by research.”
