Right-Hand Chevy Camaro is Yours, if You Want It
Much like the headline “WAR IS OVER,” a right-hand drive Chevrolet Camaro could become a reality, if you want it.
General Motors has confirmed that a right-hand-drive version of the new sixth-gen Camaro could be produced for Australia and the United Kingdom, if the automaker discovers that there is sufficient demand in those markets. So Aussies and Brits who want a right-hand Camaro should request, nay, demand it!
“If we think the volume is such that we should do the right-hand drive, it’s an investment to do that for us,” Chevrolet Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser said at the 2016 New York Auto Show. “If the volume wouldn’t sustain it, you know, and there’s nobody in Japan anymore, so it would be Australia and the UK.”
“Is there enough to sustain it? We’re studying that,” he added.
The fact that a right-hand-drive Ford Mustang, the Camaro’s arch-enemy, is sold out in Australia until 2017 would suggest that GM has reason to consider launching a Holden-badged Camaro down under.
“I’ll tell you we’re studying our competitors over in Dearborn and what they’re doing,” Oppenheiser said.
However, Oppenheiser also suggested that GM would not be swayed by temporary infatuation—the company is looking for a love that’s more permanent.
“Well this is what you have to understand: is it a demand because everybody that wanted one bought one in the first year? And are they going to sell them in year two? You don’t want to do that, right? It’s like your V8 – everybody’s going to buy your V8 first, so you want to have all your suppliers ready to pump out as many V8s as you can, because they’re going to buy them first. Then it levels off – V6 and our 2.0-liter turbo will take over as the volume leader.”
“The same thing with that right-hand-drive decision is, is it something that will sustain a certain volume every year? If it is, we’ll do it,” he said.
So Australia and UK enthusiasts: just how bad do you want a right-hand-drive Camaro?
