Ron Capps Ends Hagan’s Reign at 46th Annual NHRA Gatornationals

Matt Hagan has had something of a winning streak in the NHRA Funny Car Series. The two-time NHRA Championship winner, who is defending his title from 2014, dominated at both the first (Winternationals) and second (Wild Horse Pass) events in the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. But fellow Mopar driver Ron Capps was ready to steal the spotlight, racing his way to victory over the weekend at Gainesville Raceway.

Like Hagan, Capps was behind the wheel of the 2015 Mopar Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car, making it three-for-three this season. Capps first took on Courtney Force, and consecutively beat out Cruz Pedregon and Tim Wilkerson (by one thousandth of a second!), before taking on and beating John Hale (the racer, not the reverend) for Capps’ 43rd Funny Car victory. Hale himself drives a 2014 Dodge Charger R/T.

“All of us at Mopar are very proud to see the new 2015 Mopar Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car in the winner’s circle for a third consecutive event with this big win by Ron Capps at the Gatornationals,” commented Pietro Gorlier, the president and CEO of Mopar Brand Service, Parts, and Customer Care. “The new Mopar-powered Funny Car package looks strong this year, and we look forward to seeing the Don Schumacher Racing drivers contend for more wins and another championship this season.”

Surprisingly, Hagan went down in the first round, losing out to Alexis DeJoria. He spoke to the upset: “It’s just one of those deals. We just kind of missed it out there and maybe were trying a little too hard, but when you’re racing someone like Alexis DeJoria you know they’re going to go up there and give it all they’ve got. We’ll rebound and show up at Charlotte and be ready.”
