The 2016 Scion FR-S

The Scion FR-S is due to receive a makeover for the 2017 model year, which should include a restyled grille and repositioned exhaust outlets. Until now, the assumption was that the coupe’s engine would remain untouched, but new reports suggest that the FR-S will receive additional power from a new electric turbocharger.

The rumors stem from comments made by Tetsuya Tada, Toyota’s chief engineer for sports cars. Tada has been in charge of the Scion FR-S’ development from the very beginning of its life as the Toyota 86. Speaking to Australian website Motoring at the Tokyo Motor Show, Tada made mention of changes to the car’s engine, body, and suspension. These changes will likely be fairly mild, however, since the Toyota 86/Scion FR-S will enter into a new generation sometime around 2019.

On top of the changes to the engine, suspension, and styling, Toyota will offer a carbon fiber roof panel in certain markets, including Japan and Australia, although it’s not yet known whether this feature will extend to the US.

The changes to the FR-S will become apparent sometime soon, since Scion plans to release the updated coupe as a 2017 model. Expect to see a reveal at one of the major auto shows in the next few months.
