Jeep-branded vehicles are famous for their off-roading capabilities, but certainly aren’t as renowned for their fuel economies. Despite this, Jeep executives have confirmed that the automaker is working on a plug-in hybrid variation of its popular Wrangler model.

Recently, evidence has emerged that suggests another Jeep model might be receiving the hybrid treatment: the Jeep Renegade.

A series of spy shots have surfaced showing a Jeep Renegade testing out in the field. What’s peculiar is that this particular Renegade has an electric shock warning sign placed on its windshield.

Such warning signs often show up during the testing phase for a hybrid or electric vehicle. Therefore, this observation adds evidence to rumors of a hybrid-powered Renegade.

Jeep has already confirmed a hybrid model for the Wrangler is on its way

The Renegade with the sign also appears to be carrying Trailhawk badges. Strangely, other hallmarks of the Trailhawk trim, such as its red tow hooks and hood stripe, appear to be missing from the vehicle.

FCA is no stranger to introducing electric powertrains to its vehicles. The company recently introduced a plug-in hybrid version of the Chrysler Pacifica minivan.

It seems unlikely, however, that a hybrid Jeep Renegade would use the same powertrain setup as the Pacifica. Right now, analysts expect the addition of a 48-volt electrical system for the Wrangler and Renegade to save the models some more miles per gallon.

At the moment, Jeep is choosing not to comment about the hybrid Renegade rumor. Yet, the introduction of this hypothetical hybrid to Jeep’s lineup would not be surprising, given what we know about Jeep’s plans for the future.
