Rumor: New Nissan GT-R Could Come in 2018
The current GT-R has been around since 2007, with initial prototypes dating all the way back to 2001. The design may be getting old, but it’s still a force to be reckoned with in the performance department. As some say here in the States, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
That’s exactly what Nissan seems to be doing with Godzilla. Shiro Nakamura, Chief Creative Officer for Nissan, told Top Gear that a new GT-R wouldn’t be revealed until 2018 at the earliest, although they are working on one already.
The Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo concept car pictured in this article bears a close resemblance to the GT-R with its circular taillights and hood shape, which has us wondering if the new GT-R will take some cues from this concept. Although the concept is a mid-engined car, the leader of the GT-R program at Nissan has explicitly stated that the GT-R will always be a front-engined coupe.
The latest version of the GT-R is the NISMO Edition on sale this year, which puts out 600 horsepower and packs a NISMO tuned suspension and a bit of carbon fiber to save weight. The original GT-R was found to be capable of up to 195 mph in top speed runs and 0-60 was achieved in just 3.2 seconds.
We’re excited to see what the new GT-R will be capable of. It’s definitely a car that deserves respect, as it can keep up with more expensive European sports cars and does so in its own uniquely Japanese style that Nissan fans love.
