The 2015 Chevy Trax isn’t even available for sale yet in the US, but it’s already creating whispers across the industry about the possibility of a Chevy Trax GMC version. The Trax, which is already sold in 66 countries, will help Chevrolet compete with other compact crossovers, like the Nissan JUKE, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tucson. And now, it seems that GMC might jump on the bandwagon with its own version based on the Trax, according to Automotive News (sub. req.).

The Trax, which was first launched in Mexico back in 2012, is the latest in a long line of Chevrolet vehicles first sold in other countries before making their US debuts. The most recent examples include the Cruze and the Spark—both of which have become great successes Stateside. The Trax already has one rebadged sibling—the Buick Encore, which began US sales back in 2013.

When asked by Automotive News whether a Chevy Trax GMC version could be a future possibility, Trax chief engineer Al Manzor replied, “I think that is certainly possible,” going on to mention the possibility of “opportunities with other brands.” Given that the Trax already features in Buick’s lineup, it makes sense that these opportunities would involve GMC. We’ll have to wait and see if this rumor has any merit, though, until after the Chevy Trax begins sales later this month.
