The specific reason FCA decided to delay these models has yet to be revealed

Things just don’t seem to be going Dodge’s way at the moment.

Dodge fans who can’t get enough of the current Challenger coupe and Charger sedan are in luck, as a new report from Automotive News implies new-generation models of both cars won’t come until 2020 at the earliest.

Both models were last redesigned for the 2015 model year and were scheduled for another overall for 2018, but unidentified sources have reportedly told Auto News that both large cars will simply be refreshed with minor updates for the time being.

This new information would confirm an earlier report in which a document sent to Canadian workers union Unifor revealed that FCA would be investing approximately $242 million to improve the plant in Brampton, Ontario, which is the location where the Challenger, Charger, and Chrysler 300 are built. That document was sent to Unifor members after they reached an agreement with FCA to continue their business partnership.

It is believed that when the Charger and Challenger finally do undergo a redesign that both models will use the automaker’s new Giorgio platform that recently debuted on the new Alfa Romeo Giulia. FCA officials have been so pleased with the platform they believe it simply needs to be lengthened and widened in order to accommodate new versions of the Challenger and Charger.

In the meantime, Dodge enthusiasts who are looking for something new will have to settle for an all-wheel drive version of the Challenger powered by a 305-horsepower V6, which was seemingly confirmed by the EPA when it revealed fuel economy ratings for this yet-to-be-released Challenger variant. In addition, it’s also been reported that Dodge is working on a wide-body version of the Challenger that would have room for larger tires. That new rubber would allow the Hellcat model to fully unleash the power of its 707-horsepower V8.

Sadly though, it’s expected the Chrysler 300 will be sacrificed upon the release of 2021 Charger and Challenger models.
