With every passing month, more applications are being developed for automobiles that used to be only available for smartphones. As we saw at the Consumer Electronics Show, the future of automobile technology lies with connected car and infotainment apps.

To address this impending need for digital data storage, SanDisk is releasing a line of flash storage devices optimized for automobile integration, which have been developed with automotive chipset vendors for integration with most application processors.

Capacity of Automotive Flash Storage Being Expanded

The California-based SanDisk Corporation, famous for its flash storage solutions, has developed what it’s dubbing “automotive-grade” NAND (not requiring power to retain data) flash devices. These are specifically designed for use in the multitude of connected cars and hi-capacity infotainment systems being developed.

SanDisk intends the high-performance storage technology to be used for in-vehicle applications such as 3D mapping and advanced augmented reality in navigation systems, entertainment systems, intuitive driver assist technology, and data event recorders. Additional memory storage will help maps load more quickly, improve touchscreen responsiveness, reduce lag time, and house more apps.

“Flash is enabling dramatic innovation in the auto industry and is expected to transform the car into one of the most connected devices we own,” said Drew Henry, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile and Connected Solutions, SanDisk. He explained further that the company’s experience with data storage makes it trusted in the automotive market.

The devices, made to endure strict quality and temperature demands, are available to all automotive manufacturers and through SanDisk sales representatives.

Specifications advertised for the automotive-grade SanDisk SD card and iNAND embedded flash drive include up to 64GB of space and operation in temperatures between -40oC to 85oC.

Hopefully increased automobile data storage will encourage automakers to continue develop boundary-pushing apps for connected car systems.
