Scott Dixon Makes History By Winning His Fourth IndyCar Championship
Only six days after the tragic death of driver Justin Wilson, the Verizon IndyCar Series returned to the racetrack to determine its 2015 series champion.

Team Penske driver Juan Pablo Montoya led the series point standings since the first race of the season, but was edged out for the championship by veteran Scott Dixon. Montoya and Dixon both finished tied with 556 points each, but Dixon’s victory on Sunday gave him three wins in the season, compared to Montoya’s two victories, which were used as the tie-breaker to determine the championship winner.
This is Dixon’s fourth championship, which ties him with Dario Franchitti, Sebastian Bourdais, and Mario Andretti for second-place in IndyCar history. AJ Foyt has the most IndyCar championships ever with seven.
Dixon’s victory in Sunday’s GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Sonoma Raceway was his 38th career victory, which leads all active drivers. His victory also gave Dixon’s team owner, Chip Ganassi, his 11th IndyCar championship, only one behind rival team owner Roger Penske.
“Scott is arguably the IndyCar driver of our generation,” Ganassi told ESPN. “His stats speak for themself. He’s up on the list of all-time winners and there’s not anybody I’d rather have driving our cars, I can tell you. On the track, off the track, he’s the complete package.”
