2016 Nissan Altima sedan reviewWe can’t decide if the residents of the town of Hopeman, in Northeast Scotland, are ingenious, crazy, or a little bit of both. The town has an issue with cars speeding through at speeds up to 60 miles per hour, too fast for a residential area. Residents have decided to fight the speeders by putting on bright work vests and aiming hairdryers at the passing cars. From fast-moving vehicles, the residents hope that the hair dryers look like police speed guns.

The More You Know: Learn more about how all-wheel drive works

The straws that broke the camel’s back were the cars darting through town when children were on their way to school. Townspeople were concerned that if a car lost control, the students walking on sidewalks could be gravely injured.

It’s not just the adults that are pulling on the vests to stare down bad drivers. The students themselves also take up the hairdryers themselves. Police Scotland, the force in charge of the area, have said in a statement that they are aware of the issues in Hopeman, and they will continue to work on the problem to keep the town safe.

While we may read this story and laugh, you have to think of the concern that drove these townspeople to pretend that they are clocking drivers with a speed gun. In their way, they are doing the best thing possible to try and force drivers to slow down, when traditional means have fallen on deaf ears. We hope that things get better for Hopeman, and that this story provides the Scottish people with a bit of a chuckle while reminding them what is at stake when they violate traffic laws.
