We see a lot of powerful SUVs and fast sedans employed as police cars across the US, including the Chevy Tahoe and the Ford Police Interceptor, but it’s not very often we see police departments opting for all-electric city cars. Seattle, Washington, is breaking the mold however, with 28 Nissan LEAF police cars in its employ, according to Green Car Reports.

Before all of our readers who frequently participate in high speed chases (from the criminal point of view) take a big sigh of relief, do note that these vehicles will be used for the more mundane tasks, like issuing parking tickets, while high speed chases will be left to other, more capable cars. The goal is to cut down on emissions and gas expenses, since police vehicles so often sit idling to use the equipment. By using Nissan LEAF EVs, officers will be able to use their equipment while relying on battery power, as opposed to burning gasoline.

Based on the photo above that Nissan released via the Seattle Nissan LEAF Owners, the department appears to be using 2011 and 2012 models in all-white. Green Car Reports conjectures that these models will be joined by newer LEAFs from the latest order.

Seattle is not the first city to rely on the Nissan LEAF for such a job, however. Multiple agencies, including the Policia Seguranca Publica in Portugal, already make use of the LEAF for such tasks, while comparable vehicles such as the Mitsubishi i-MiEV are used across the globe.
