Sebastian Vettel: 2014 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year

Sebastian Vettel has plenty to be happy to about. When you are almost guaranteed victory every time you get behind the wheel before a race, it’s easy to get a big head about yourself. Vettel, however, maintains a level of decorum that should be expected of all professional athletes and is continuously gracious in both victory and the occasional defeat, which is precisely why he was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards held at Kuala Lampur’s Istana Budaya (Palace of Culture).

This year marked Vettel’s fifth nomination for Sportsman of the Year and his first victory, which shows that he doesn’t actually win every single trophy ever made after all. Nominated alongside Seb were world-class athletes like Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Lebron James, Rafa Nadal, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Vettel was given the award by two-time Indy 500 winner/F1 world champion, Emerson Fittipaldi.

“I have massive respect for the other athletes here,” Vettel said upon accepting the award.

“When I was on stage and saw so many of the greats, it was truly a very special moment. All the Members of The Academy are true greats – heroes, legends and to see some of them on stage, others in the room and on the red carpet, makes this night very special.”
