Self-Driving LEAF Dazzles Nissan CEO Ghosn at CEATEC
At this year’s Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) show in Japan, Nissan revealed to the world its progress toward a fully-autonomous vehicle. If video demonstrating the capabilities of a self-driving LEAF are proof enough, it seems entirely possible that the automaker’s aforementioned 2020 projection for autonomous driving may be more of a worst-case timeline.
In one video, Nissan correspondent Coco Masters states that safety is of the self-driving LEAF’s primary objective. Speed is calculated and applied to match the width of turns, and five cameras and five laser sensors quickly and accurately identify road signs and conditions (including pedestrians and other vehicles) to dictate the LEAF’s actions.
Li Hui, a Phoenix TV producer, believes that the self-driving LEAF would be popular among women in China for its ability to make their morning commutes easier. Masters reaffirms that Nissan’s objective with the fully-autonomous LEAF is zero-emissions and zero fatalities on roadways.
The second video documents Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn’s experience behind the wheel (though not touching it) of the LEAF. Ghosn expresses enthusiasm about the self-driving LEAF’s smoothness and simplicity. He goes on to state that the demo puts the pressure on his company to deliver a fully-autonomous production car to the public before its competitors.
