General Motors is looking to grow the reach of its OnStar in-vehicle service with a new partnership announced at the 2016 Appliance and Electronics World Expo.

Shanghai OnStar and the Midea Group announced that it will enter into a strategic partnership that will see the former’s onboard telematics integrated with the latter’s smart household technology. Midea is China’s top brand for home appliances and considered a trailblazer in smart home tech, and it has stated its ultimate goal as being the regulation and control of air, nutrition, water, and energy.

The objective of the partnership is to utilize OnStar’s telematics to interact with Midea’s smart appliances that will allow, presumably, for drivers to interact with the technology in their homes from the comfort of their vehicles.

“The cross-industry collaboration in onboard telematics and smart household technology between Shanghai OnStar and Midea is the first of its kind in China,” said Lynn Longo, managing director of Shanghai OnStar and the GM Global Connected Consumer (GCC) Beijing Group. “It will broaden the reach of onboard telematics and smart household technology to enhance the consumer experience.”

At the show, Shanghai OnStar presented the new Buick LaCrosse and demonstrated the ability of its 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot to interact with smart home technology. Shanghai OnStar has nearly 1 million customers in China, and it is available on the following models: Cadillac ATS, ATS-L, XTS, SLS, CTS, SRX, and Escalade; Buick Enclave, Envision, Encore, LaCrosse, Regal, Excelle, and GL8; and Chevrolet Cruze, Aveo, Malibu, and Trax.
