Ford continues its roll of awards and recognition for its new performance vehicles with the announcement that the Shelby GT350 Mustang and Shelby GT350R Mustang have both been named to the 2016 Car and Driver 10Best list. This is the 10th time that some variation of the Mustang has made the coveted list.

Car and Driver acknowledged the merits of both new Mustangs on its annual list, and in its rundown of the GT350 and GT350R, Ezra Dyer muses what the man for whom the ponies are named would think of them.

What would Shelby have thought of a flat-plane crank? The latest cars to bear his name sound not like a Ferrari or a Mustang but like a Mustang racing a Ferrari. It’s a glorious noise, an 8250-rpm declaration of new fundamentals. In an era of engineering homogeneity, of subtle variations on familiar themes, the GT350 and GT350R are radical departures. Earlier this month the Shelby GT350 Mustang won both the AutoGuide.com Reader’s Choice Car of the Year and the Hispanic Motor Press Award for its category. The Shelby GT350R Mustang was also named the Road & Track Performance Car of the Year.
