The very first thing Automobile Magazine writes in its piece recapping the seven vehicle chosen to be its 2016 All-Stars: “We don’t do boring.” To further confirm that proclamation, the editors at Automobile determined that the Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang and Shelby GT350R Mustang, two decidedly not-boring vehicles, were among the best.

The 2016 Automobile All-Stars were determined by the publication’s team and special guest tester Andy Pilgrim, former SCAA World Challenge Champion and Daytona 24 winner. The vehicles were tested on a 1.5-mile cut of the 6 miles’ worth of track available at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada.

Automobile’s editor-at-large Arthur St. Antoine did his best to contend with Zack Bowman’s write-up for the Shelby GT350R being named the 2016 Road & Track Performance Car of the Year—wherein the pony car was compared to, of all things, Cthulhu—by calling the Shelby GT350 Mustang “a beast on the track and a Saturn V rocket out on the open road” and saying that the GT350R has “more power and grip than the Terminator.”

The team drove both the GT350 and GT350R, with Marc Noordeloos noting that the latter has “a very ‘mean American’ feel but balances that with a very good chassis.” Pilgrim referred to the GT350R’s flat-plane V8 as being “loud in a way that homeowner associations just love,” and Preston Lerner added that it is “a magnificent piece that makes all the right noises.”

Ford’s newest Mustangs have earned a number of awards since hitting the market, including being named one of Car and Driver’s 10Best.
