The future of Kia has been spied in prototype form earlier this week. Kia is currently working on a brand-new subcompact crossover, and it was caught in camouflage while testing. The vehicle, which is basically a hatchback that is aspiring to be a crossover, will increase the South Korean carmaker’s presence in the crossover segment. It will also appeal to those consumers looking for a vehicle that is big on space, great with fuel economy, and still small enough to traverse urban settings with ease.

The vehicle is currently unnamed, but it will enter the lineup in the slot below the compact Kia Sportage and above the funky Kia Soul. In this position, it will compete with a variety of vehicles including the upcoming Toyota C-HR, the Mazda CX-3, the Honda HR-V, and the Chevrolet Trax.

Reports are saying that the small crossover will have standard front-wheel drive with an all-wheel drive option. It will also likely only come with an automatic transmission option. Nothing else is really known about this vehicles powertrain or other features.

Along with being a Kia model, Hyundai is also expected to offer a new subcompact crossover with the same platform. The styling will mirror that of the Kia Provo concept, which debuted in 2013 at the Geneva Auto Show.

If you’re hankering for this petite Kia, you won’t have to wait for long. The model is expected to debut later next year, and will go on sale as a 2018 model around the same time.
