General Motors has reaffirmed its commitment to the Spring Hill Manufacturing Plant in Tennessee with the recent announcement that it will invest an additional $788.7 million at the plant in order to create a new high-efficiency engine program, as well as modernize other vehicle programs at the plant.

In total, this new investment will create 792 new jobs at the plant and will retain 16 additional positions. This is the second major investment GM has made in Spring Hill just this year, as it also provided an additional $148 million to the plant back in February, which was done in order to repurpose its flexible machining and assembly equipment.

“Spring Hill and its employees have earned a reputation for producing award-winning engines,” said UAW Local 1853 Chairman Mike Herron. “GM recognizes this and we’re thankful they are investing further in the future of this facility and this community.”

Spring Hill Manufacturing first opened its doors back in 1990, and Saturn automobiles were built there until 2007. Since then, the plant has produced everything from the Chevrolet Traverse to the Chevy Equinox. The plant currently produces the new Cadillac XT5 crossover and will be adding another shift in the spring in order to manufacture the 2017 GMC Acadia. There’s also an engine plant at the Spring Hills location that produces four-cylinder motors.

“This investment will help GM and our workforce continue to put the customer at the center of everything we do, providing them with powertrain solutions to meet their changing needs,” said Arvin Jones, GM North America manufacturing manager. “Today’s announcement reinforces our absolute faith in this facility, and our strong commitment to this community and the state of Tennessee.”

Construction will start in May and is expected to last for a few years. Furthermore, GM also announced it will be investing $118 million at the Bay City Powertrain plant, which provides engine parts for many GM models. This $188 million investment retained 67 jobs at the plant and added 29 more positions.
