Spy Shots Reveal New Three-Row, Seven-Passenger Subaru Ascent SUV
At the end of 2014, rumors began spreading that Subaru was developing a brand-new flagship SUV to replace the outgoing Tribeca. Although it was initially speculated that the SUV would be released as a 2017 model, little was heard about Subaru’s progress after the automaker confirmed that something was in the works. Lists of potential model names circulated until one was deemed a viable possibility: the Ascent, which Subaru trademarked recently.
Now, as 2016 comes to a close, the Subaru Ascent SUV has finally been spotted in action. And it looks like it’s on its way to being a 2018 model.

Earlier today, Car and Driver released spy photos of the three-row, seven passenger SUV in testing, cloaked in chunky black camouflage.
Judging by the images, the Ascent will have a boxy shape and generous cabin room, something the crossover-obsessed market hasn’t seen much of recently. Now that Subaru has committed to establishing its models on the same common global platform, we can assume that this will guide the underpinnings of the Ascent as well.
As Subaru is undeniably gaining traction in the US market for its high-quality and affordably-priced family vehicles, this is the perfect time for the automaker to grow its lineup with a flagship SUV. Whether it will indeed be called the Ascent or another signature outdoorsy name has yet to be seen.
