Late last month, Subaru and United By Blue began a partnership that will last until May of next year. United By Blue, an outdoor lifestyle brand that sells apparel and accessories, is committed to removing a pound of trash from oceans and other waterways for every product it sells. As Subaru is also a big supporter of a clean environment (and the outdoor lifestyle), it will be serving as the official vehicle of United By Blue’s cleanups this year and next.

In total, Subaru and United By Blue will partner for six cleanups. Two have already been completed: the first on July 25th at the Patapsco River in Ellicott City, Maryland, and the second over the weekend, on August 1st, at the Jordan River in Salt Lake City, Utah. In September, United By Blue and Subaru will head to the Cuyahoga River (September 12th) in Cleveland, Ohio, and Brandywine Creek (September 19th) in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Then, next year, the two brands will reunite at Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey, on April 23, 2016, and again in Detroit, Michigan, on May 21, 2016.

Before the two cleanups that United By Blue just completed with Subaru, the brand had already hosted 130 cleanups in the US (21 states total), and it had collected 243,843 pounds of litter from rivers, the ocean, and other waterways. Subaru hopes to get United By Blue to the 250,000 mark by the end of 2015.

“We at Subaru, like many of our owners, believe it is our responsibility to help affect positive change in the world and our partnership with United By Blue exemplifies that belief,” remarked Tim Tagye, promotions and sponsorship manager at Subaru of America. “Together, our cleanup activities can make a difference in keeping our waterways beautiful.”

Subaru has a history of being environmentally active. The brand has an initiative called “Subaru Loves the Earth,” part of which involves its zero-landfill plant in Indiana. Through this initiative, Subaru has also teamed up with Leave No Trace, the International Mountain Biking Association, and the National Park Foundation; Subaru is even sharing its zero-landfill knowledge with the national parks.
