2018 Subaru Crosstrek

The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek earned the top spot in Cars.com’s 2018 Subcompact SUV Challenge, beating tough competition for the second year running and showing that its redesign was well worth it.

Vehicles in the challenge were rated across 13 categories, including convenience features, handling, powertrain, ride quality, interior quality, front- and back-seat comfort, visibility, and affordability. Combined, a perfect car would theoretically earn 1,000 points.

Models also earned points based on cargo volume, active safety technologies, and grades in the Cars.com Car Seat Check that assesses how easily a variety of child safety seats can be used. The all-new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek scored a total of 667 points, putting it ahead of all other subcompact SUVs, and was lauded for its mix of practicality, quality, roominess, and drivability.

“Cabin materials are lush. Padding is generous where it counts, and most surfaces have handsome, low-gloss finishes,” said Kelsey Mays, Cars.com senior consumer affairs editor. “All of the contenders had cloth interiors,” added Brian Wong, Cars.com Los Angeles bureau chief, “but this one felt the most high-quality — not something I thought I’d say about a Subaru.”

The editors also noted the Crosstrek’s excellent sightlines, child-safety seat accommodations and powertrain. Overall, it ranked strongly in almost all categories, scoring a low fourth in only one.

“We are very proud that Crosstrek has won the title of Best Subcompact SUV by Cars.com for a second time,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “Subaru is committed to developing top-quality vehicles that are safe, versatile, and fun; the 2018 Crosstrek encapsulates what customers have come to expect from a Subaru.”
