There’s a rumor floating around about the Subaru lineup and it’s electric—boogie woogie woogie. Electric slide references aside, the Japanese brand is looking to introduce a brand-new all-electric model by 2012.

According to Automotive News, this potential all-electric Subaru was reported about in an August 8th article from the Japanese newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun. Though the article didn’t identify its source of information, it did say that the Japanese carmaker will release a mid-size all-wheel-drive vehicle that is based on its popular Forester or Outback crossover models—and it will be all-electric, too.

This move towards an all-electric crossover from Subaru reflect the brand’s plan to meet the United States more stringent emissions regulations. The new model will have Subaru’s new global platform, which was unveiled earlier this year by Fuji Heavy Industries, the brand’s parent company. This platform will also be used for other redesigned models, including the Subaru Impreza, which was introduced earlier this year.

When asked about the potential all-electric Subaru crossover, Fuji Heavy spokesman Masato Saito stated, “We have yet to decide on any specifics at the moment.”

Subaru’s move towards a greener lineup shouldn’t come as any surprise to consumers. The brand has already unveiled plans to introduce its first-ever plug-in hybrid for the American market, which will help it meet the US’s zero emissions vehicle regulations that will take effect in 2018. Because Subaru has such a heavy all-wheel drive lineup, the brand wants to boost fuel efficiency to meet America’s stricter standards.
