Subaru has been having some pretty decent success in the U.S. market recently, selling 45,714 cars in the month of July alone. To put that in perspective, that’s a 27 percent increase over Subaru’s sales in July of 2013, and roughly 100 times as many cars as Tesla sold in July of this year (which was right after Tesla sales became legal in all fifty states, so they can’t use that as an excuse).

Obviously, Tesla is a much smaller operation that caters to a niche market (its average vehicle sells for four times as much as the average Subaru), but the apples-to-oranges comparison still puts into perspective how profitable Subaru has been lately.

From the start of the year to July, Subaru sold 283,722 cars, putting the company on track to move 500,000 units by the end of 2014. That’s 30 times more than the number of cars Tesla anticipates selling in the U.S. market this year. And while Tesla suffered a 26% drop in U.S. sales during the first half of 2014, Subaru enjoyed a 16% increase during the same period.

World Record Performance: Watch a Subaru BRZ break a Guinness World Record

Subaru recently launched its first hybrid car, the XV Crosstrek, which has a manufacturer suggested retail price of $25,995 for the base 2.0i model. The crossover SUV manages 29 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway, but only time will tell if Subaru’s entry into the hybrid market will help give it an even greater edge over Tesla, a company beloved by green car enthusiasts, which is planning its own fuel-efficient crossover SUV in the form of the upcoming electric Model X.
