Subaru’s sole production facility that exists outside of the brand’s home country of Japan is stationed about an hour outside of Indianapolis in Lafayette, Indiana. The plant currently has about 3,800 workers in its employ.

Today, however, the automaker announced that it would be making a staggering $140.2 million investment into the plant, including the creation of another 1,204 jobs for Hoosiers by 2017. The factory currently produces the Subaru Outback and the Subaru Legacy, but due to the growing popularity of the underdog automaker, the plant is struggling to keep up with demands. Currently, Subaru of Indiana Automotive produces around 300,000 vehicles each year, but the latest investment should boost that number to 400,000.

Subaru has been doing exceedingly well in the United States in the last few years, accounting for the increased demand. The brand strikes a chord with outdoorsy drivers who enjoy off-road adventures. It is also appealing to environmentalists and animal activists due to the brand’s conservation and pet safety efforts. And on top of that, the brand has been producing some of the best automotive commercials in recent years, like this one, this one, this one, this one, this one, and these. Most importantly, the brand continues to roll out incredible new products, like the 2016 Forester, the 2016 Outback, and the limited edition Series.HyperBlue models for both the WRX STI and the BRZ.

Subaru has also announced a $400 million expansion of its plant, which should be done by the end of next year. This investment includes a new paint shop and expanded stamping and assembly locations. Work on this project is already underway.

Since the plant opened in 1989, it has produced more than 4 million vehicles.
