The Subaru WRX has made a name for itself by providing power and performance at a fairly reasonable price, with the most recent model boasting a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine that yields 268 horsepower, and starting at about $26,000. A new study finds that drivers who chose the WRX for its speed got what they paid for – and then paid a fine for getting it.
In a new list from insurance.com that ranks vehicles by what percentage of their drivers were recently ticketed, the Subaru WRX finished in first place. The WRX claimed the title of America’s most ticketed car thanks to the fact that a whopping 33.6% of WRX drivers had received traffic tickets in the last three years. That means over one-third of all Subaru WRX owners can’t drive 55.

Subaru’s now-extinct crossover, the Tribeca, also made the top ten, finishing in fifth place with 29.7% of owners receiving a ticket in the past three years. Rounding out the top ten list was the second place Pontiac GTO (32.7%), the Scion FR-S (32.6%, the Toyota Supra (30.8%), the sixth place Volkswagen Rabbit (29.6%), the Mercury Topaz (28.8%), the Scion tC (28.8%), the Toyota FJ Cruiser (28.4%), and excessively vroom vrooming it’s way into a tenth place, the Mazda2 (28.1%).
What is perhaps most shocking about this list is not who finished first, but who finished last. Almost unbelievably, the Dodge Viper finished 522nd out of 526 ranked vehicles. Despite the fact that the 2015 Viper throws down 645 ponies, only 5.4% of Viper owners were ticketed in the past three years. That could just prove that if you have enough money to buy a five-figure automobile, you also have enough money to influence highway patrolmen. Or it could just mean that only old guys drive Vipers.

“It’s not about horsepower,” Des Toups, managing editor of Insurance.com, told CBS. “The Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper and Nissan GT-R rank well below average for tickets even though they can easily double the highest speed limits. But those cars are also costly, so their buyers tend to be older and take fewer risks.”
If you’re wondering which vehicle gets ticketed the least, the answer is the Chevy Orlando LS. A whole 0.0% of those who drive the Orlando LS were ticketed in the past year. Of course, that could just be because roughly 0.0% of Americans drive the Orlando LS.
