The 2016 Nürburgring 24-Hour Race just wrapped up at the end of last month, running from May 26th through the 29th in Germany. To little surprise, the powerful Subaru WRX STI claimed yet another victory in its class (SP3T—turbocharged cars with engines that are 2.0-liters or less). The specific WRX STI that dominated the track was the Subaru WRX STI NBR Challenge 2016, which, despite its awesome performance, is based on the WRX STI that can be purchased at your local dealership.

The Subaru WRX STI NBR Challenge 2016 started from second due to a successful qualifying, but the drivers quickly overtook the leader via some fancy teamwork. Driving the WRX STI during the day-long race were Carlo van Dam of the Netherlands, Marcel Lasée of Germany, Tim Schrick of Germany, and Hideki Yamauchi of Japan.

The team was able to climb from second to first in the day-long race

According to Subaru, the team completed the 121 laps (approximately 3,070 kilometers, or 1,907.61 miles for all of us obstinate Americans) in the 24-hour timeframe. This win is extra special, as it marks a back-to-back victory for Subaru, which won with the WRX STI last year in the SP3T class. In fact, in the nine consecutive years that Subaru has competed in the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race, the team has won four times.

Subaru sees this victory as yet another commendation for its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive platform, on which most of its vehicles are built. Nürburgring is notoriously one of the world’s most difficult courses, so the WRX STI’s fantastic performance is proof that Subaru is doing something right with its performance cars.
