Doll received the award at the annual Motor Trend Of The Year Awards show, which was streamed live on the Motor Trend Channel.
This was the first time that Motor Trend gave out the Person of the Year award, which is given to the person who ranks No. 1 on its annual power list. Doll was able to move up 40 spots from his ranking last year based on the strength of Subaru sales, with the brand currently experiencing its eighth year of consecutive record sales.
Subaru is expected to sell close to 600,000 vehicles this year in the US, with its best-selling vehicle being the 2016 Subaru Forester, which has already moved 144,740 units through October. The Forester was also named Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year back in 2014.
Under Doll’s leadership, Subaru is now outselling brands such as Buick, Mazda, VW, and BMW.
“At first glance, Tom might seem an unexpected choice for Motor Trend’s first ever Person of the Year,” said Motor Trend Editor-at-Large Angus MacKenzie. “He’s not an engineer or a designer or a marketer by training, but his unique vision and quiet leadership have guided Subaru to outstanding success over the past few years. This recognition is richly deserved.”
