Sue-Ann Lewack Becomes First Certified Female Calibrator in Africa

General Motors South Africa’s Sue-Ann Lewack became the first certified female calibrator in all of Africa last month. In what remains a largely male-dominated industry, Lewack’s ascent to the top of her field sets a new standard for women on the continent looking to break into the automotive field.
Certification is a process that generally takes 18 months to complete. Lewack, not one to wait, completed the program in just seven months.
“I want to pave the way for other women to step up to the plate,” said Lewack. “This is a good platform for women to show their steel in motor manufacturing that is still largely male dominated.”
Lewack, 39, has been with GMSA for 19 years. She not only became the first woman in her field to achieve certification, but she recently led a series of workshops both in Egypt and Kenya regarding Short Lead Time (SLT).
“I am thankful that my loyalty towards GM has paid off and that I was not overlooked. My instincts that I would have a solid future with the company was spot on when I walked into the door of GM 19 years ago,” said Lewack.
