first 3d trademark So here’s something you don’t see every day. Actually, let’s go ahead and amend that statement: here’s something you’ve never seen before. Because it has never happened before. The Japan Patent Office has bestowed its first 3D trademark to the Honda Super Cub, recognizing the fundamental importance of the scooter’s shape to its fifty-year-plus identity.

The Honda Super Cub was first introduced in 1958, and its design has remained consistent through various performance improvements over the course of 56 years. As such, the very shape of the Super Cub makes it immediately identifiable as a Honda product, and that connection with consumers was ultimately the point that convinced the Japan Patent Office to grant the country’s first 3D trademark.

Over more than half a century, the Super Cub has been sold in more than 160 countries with sales totaling 87 million units (as of March 2014), which makes it the best-selling internal-combustion vehicle ever made. The current Super Cub is produced in 15 production plants in 14 countries around the world.

Road & Track notes that the Vespa and Fiat 500 are 3D trademark owners in Italy, and Alex Nunez suggests that the Citroën 2CV and DS, Harley-Davidson Sportster, Jeep Wrangler are all worthy of 3D trademarks.

We’d put forth that the Beetle, Porsche 911, MINI Cooper, and pretty much any Lamborghini model could make cases for 3D trademarks, but we want to hear from you. What other vehicles are worthy of a 3D trademark?
