We could discern as early as January that the Ford Mustang was once again the best-selling pony car in the United States in 2017, topping the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger handily with sales totaling 81,866 vehicles delivered. Now, in observance of National Mustang Day, Ford has confirmed the logical conclusion that the Mustang also topped its rivals at a global level to become the best-selling sports coupe on Earth for a third consecutive year.

According to IHS Markit, Mustang registrations around the globe totaled 125,809 vehicles, which means that more than one-third of all Mustangs sold around the world—43,943 units to be exact—are being driven by customers in export markets.

“The world loves Ford Mustang,” says Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst. “For years, Mustang was unobtainable for customers on most parts of the planet. It could only be found on TV or the internet, and now it rolls down streets from Beijing to São Paulo.”

Among the biggest key markets for the Mustang outside of the United States in 2017 was China, where the Mustang saw sales totaling 7,125 vehicles and retained its crown as the country’s best-selling sports coupe. According to Ford, women both at home and abroad have also been integral in making the Mustang the world’s preferred sports coupe thanks to a 10% uptick in sales to female drivers over the past 5 years.

From the time that Ford first took the sixth-generation Mustang global in 2015 to the end of 2017, global Mustang sales in 146 countries total around 418,000 vehicles.
