General Motors and its joint ventures in China accumulated sales totaling 3,870,587 vehicles in 2016, a 7.1% increase from 2015’s total and a new all-time record for volume. For the fifth straight year, China stands as GM’s biggest global market, with the 3.87 million sales in China accounting for more than one third of all sales in 2016.

“GM worked closely with our joint venture partners to achieve launch excellence across all brands in the past year,” said GM Executive Vice President and President of GM China Matt Tsien. “In 2017, we will continue to listen to our customers’ needs and meet their demands with a strong product lineup.”

General Motors launched 13 new and significantly updated vehicles in China in 2016, consistent with its intention to drop 60 new and refreshed models in China by 2020. For the most part, the automaker focused on bolstering its SUV and MPV offerings, also consistent with GM’s intention for approximately 40% of its new vehicle offerings between 2016 and 2020 to be SUVs and MPVs.

Cadillac grew 45.9% over 2015 with 116,406 units sold, a new volume record for the brand that was made possible by sales of the new XT5 crossover.

Buick sales were also a record high at 1,180,372 units, up 19% over 2015, driven by the success of the Excelle GT and Envision. Chevrolet sales totaled 525,273 units on the strength of numerous new vehicle launches, including the Malibu XL, Cruze, and Cavalier. Baojun sales were up 49% with a record-breaking 688,390 units sold, and Wuling sales totaled 1,359,638.

Chevy SUV sales were up 45% from 2015 at 673,409 units, and MPV sales were up 5% at 1,061,156 units.
