Toyota FT-4X NYIAS Teaser

On Wednesday, April 12, during the New York International Auto Show, Toyota will premiere a new FT-4X Concept for which it has just released a single teaser image, shown above.

Already it seems clear what this new concept will preview: a rugged, four-wheel-drive (4WD) off-roader. How do we know this? Historically, Toyota has used the “FT” acronym to signify “future Toyota” on concept vehicles, and if “4X” didn’t seem straightforward enough in the way it suggests a 4×4, the automaker used the words themselves in the title for the press release containing the teaser image: “Four Wheeling. Scene Stealing.”

Then there’s the teaser shot to examine. Let’s see here…chunky off-road Goodyear tire? Check. Rugged body cladding? Check. Eye-catching orange highlights reminiscent of the FJ Cruiser? Check!

It would make sense for Toyota to launch a new off-roader as well, in light of the new Ford Bronco SUV and Ranger truck that were recently announced and the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler that is soon to be revealed. Why not get in on the action and get a cut of the pie?

Toyota also seems to have undergone a recent shift toward more performance-oriented vehicles, highlighted by the aggressive next-generation Camry and the announcement of a three-pronged sports car lineup. That means we could possibly get something more akin to the hardcore Land Cruiser off-roader of old than the softer FJ Cruiser—either way, we’ll be happy.
