Despite a nearly 10% sales loss, the Camaro managed to reign supreme in the sports car segment last month

The Camaro flexed its sales muscles during the month of October

It used to be rather ordinary that, month after month, the Ford Mustang would come out on top in terms of muscle car sales. However, it seems that particular trend is dying down, as the Dodge Challenger recently surpassed the Mustang in terms of sales back in June.

Now it’s the Chevrolet Camaro’s turn to reign supreme, as it outsold both the Challenger and the Mustang in October.

By the end of the month, Chevrolet had sold 5,674 Camaro vehicles. Meanwhile, Ford sold 5,236 Mustang models and Dodge sold only 3,893 Challenger units during that same period.

Camaro sales success in October is nothing new. After all, Camaro sales were actually down last month by 9.61% when compared to October of 2016, when Chevy sold 6,277 Camaros, once again eclipsing the Mustang and Challenger’s sales performance.

2018 Ford Mustang GT

Despite still leading the herd in 2017, the Ford Mustang is currently on a sharp sales decline

Of course, year-to-date, the Mustang is still ahead, as Ford has sold 67,432 Mustang models so far this year. Yet this is a large 27.24% sales decrease when compared to the 92,672 Mustangs sold during the first 10 months of 2016.

The Camaro comes in second year-to-date, with a total of 59,401 units sold. Despite the Challenger’s third-place finish with 56,169 vehicles sold, sales are actually up for the model by 1.63%.

Sales for the sports car segment as a whole, however, are on the decline. When other two-door sports models, like the Mazda Miata and Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, are included in the mix, year-to-date sales in the segment are down by 10.02%.

There are a few exceptions to these declining sales, like the Challenger and the MX-5 Miata, which is experiencing a 23.59% sales increase, but these would appear to be outliers to the trend. Still, no other sports car is on a steeper sales decline than the Mustang, and this could present plenty of opportunities for rivals like the Camaro in the near future.
