Before you head out on the open road with man’s best friend, it’s always important to have a checklist of items you need to keep your dog happy in the car. One of the key items on this list, though, is a dog-friendly destination. To help you choose the next city you should put on your road trip itinerary, we have come up with the five most dog-friendly destination cities in America.

1. Portland, Oregon

Portland is already known as being a bit nature-y with its organic food, hipster population, and laid-back vibe. It’s just this atmosphere that makes Portland one of the best places in America for dogs. The city has an abundance of dog parks, dog bakeries, and dog-friendly restaurants. It even has dog-height drinking fountains! And we’re sure your dog will absolutely love the hiking trails and coastline that make this city a beautiful place to be.

2. Salt Lake City, Utah

Nestled in the Rockies, Salt Lake City is not like many other cities. The area is littered with nature reserves, trails, canyons, and off-leash parks that make it a practical cornucopia for dogs and nature-lovers alike. Don’t forget to hike Utah’s red rocks with your best four-legged friend!

3. Chicago, Illinois

The Windy City might as well be renamed the Dog City, because it is that dog-friendly. With prime lakefront real estate, Chicago has plenty of beaches—and three of them are for dogs only. There are also an abundance of dog-friendly restaurants and shops, while the Navy Pier allows you to bring your pet along, so you don’t have to leave Fido behind while you sightsee.

4. Las Vegas, Nevada

Surprisingly enough, Sin City is practically heaven for gamblers and dogs alike. If your pet doesn’t feel like taking part in a poker game, you can him or her to one of the city’s 20 off-leash parks. The city itself is also considered one of the most walkable in the country, making it easy to take your dog with you wherever you go.

5. San Diego, California

San Diego has 70 miles of coastline. That is 70 miles of open sand for your dog to frolic in. This, along with plenty of dog-friendly beaches and terrific weather, make it the perfect place for your pups to play. The city even holds an annual dog surfing competition. Who wouldn’t want to see a bunch of puppies surfing the waves?
