Here’s something that, when you hear it bandied about as a reality, you immediately wonder why it’s taken so long for it to come to pass: the newly-launched Ford S-MAX comes with a feature called the Intelligent Speed Limiter. It does exactly what it sounds like it does. Yay.

“Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement,” said Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor, Ford of Europe. “Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.”

When activated, Intelligent Speed Limiter sets a maximum vehicle speed that will be adhered to at all times. Through a windshield-mounted camera, it can also monitor road signs to determine if the speed ahead is less than the pre-set maximum speed and adjust accordingly.

Intelligent Speed Limiter works between speeds of 20 mph and 120 mph, so it’ll likely come in handy for those long road trips through unfamiliar territory (particularly useful if you’re passing through Virginia). No word as to whether or not the Intelligent Speed Limiter can be programmed to understand the near-ubiquitous 9 mph cushion.
