Cadillac’s strapping new CT6 V-Sport sedan packs a real punch. That’s because it’s powered by a first for the auto brand: a 4.2-liter Twin Turbo V8 engine that delivers 550 horsepower and 637 lb-ft of torque.

That’s a big leap beyond the original CT6, whose most premium option is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that provides 404 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

“Cadillac’s performance technology reaches new heights with the new and exclusive 4.2-liter Twin Turbo V8,” said Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen. “The engineering prowess embodies the very spirit of Cadillac performance on and off the racetrack.”

Cadillac’s engineers designed and built the new twin-turbocharged engine from scratch.

“Designing an all-new engine was the best way to achieve the performance goals for the CT6 V-Sport,” said chief engineer Jordan Lee. “It builds on Cadillac’s well-established turbocharging know-how and forges new ground with innovative features that deliver exceptional performance and refinement.”

The Twin Turbo V8 is configured in a “hot V” layout that increases the engine’s efficiency while reducing its size. This compact design has resulted in power density of 131 horsepower per liter.

The new V8 is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission with a wider gear ratio spread that gives the engine’s performance and efficiency even more of a boost.

Other key features of the Twin Turbo V8 include:

  • Twin-scroll turbochargers
  • Variable-pressure oiling system
  • Twin water-to-air charge coolers
  • Electronic wastegate control
  • Direct injection
  • Twin throttle bodies
  • Dual-independent camshaft phasing
  • Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation)
  • Stop-start technology

The CT6 V-Sport is expected to come out later this year, and details about the luxury sports sedan’s new engine are sure to fuel even more anticipation among high-performance car enthusiasts.
