With the sheer amount of technology packed into most cars these days, drivers can often expect large service bills if and when something goes wrong. But there are times when even the most straightforward-yet-costly repair can be avoided if you just have the knowledge and know-how. One Toyota Camry Hybrid owner, Christopher Orgeron, discovered this when he took his car in after having repeated issues with the hybrid battery. His dealership service center told him that they would need to replace the battery for the costly sum of $4,400.

While it’s undoubtedly best practice to replace a battery that’s producing the same error codes as Orgeron’s, this owner knew a thing or two about batteries and decided to check it out for himself before shelling out thousands to replace the unit. He removed the battery from the car and carefully tested each individual cell, expecting one of them to need replacing. Surprisingly, all cells were working as they should. But what Orgeron did discover was that the battery’s copper connectors were extremely corroded, leading him to clean them with a simple vinegar and baking soda solution.

Once Orgeron had cleaned the connectors and replaced the battery, he found that his car was in perfect working condition.

This is definitely an incredible story, but we don’t recommend messing with your hybrid battery if you haven’t a clue what you’re doing. However, it’s nice to see that seemingly expensive issues can sometimes be resolved much more cheaply and easily than you’d first think.
