If you’re a fan of classic cars, or a car enthusiast in general, you know that a 1967 Cadillac Coupe DeVille should be handled with care. This vintage coupe is drool-worthy when in the right condition, and one lucky Reddit user found one in Alabama that he wanted to fix up. Or at least he thought he was lucky.

The Reddit user’s name is Sim, and he thought he’d hit the jackpot when he came across a listing for a “non-operational” 1967 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. When he found it, he decided to go ahead and purchase it so he could surprise his dad with the self-refurbished model. The only catch is that Sim lives in Georgia, approximately two and a half hours from where the car was located. He went ahead and bought it anyway, hiring a third-party towing company to ship the vehicle to him.

Sim never got a notification when the vehicle was picked up. In hindsight, that was clue number one. After waiting around all day, the tow truck finally arrived with an extremely rude man behind the wheel. The truck driver and his partner had run into a problem: they couldn’t get the car off the truck. It had been improperly secured. “I was outside trying to offer them help for hours,” said Sim. “I went inside and let them do their work without bothering them.”

Well, as it turns out, leaving the two men up to their own devices was not the best move. They decided to try to push the car to get it to move, but they applied too much force and the Cadillac slipped off one of the railings. “At this point, the car is sitting on ONE rail, whole weight on its oil pan which eventually [cracked and oil started] pouring out.”

But it doesn’t stop there. It actually gets worse.

Sim called a local towing company to come help and went inside (not the best idea, but we understand he was probably pretty frustrated). When he came back out to check on them, his car was completely off the truck rails – but not the way it should be. The vintage Coupe DeVille was flipped on its side, sitting in the middle of the road. The car was “blocking an entire lane of traffic on a major downtown boulevard. Broken roof, cracked oil pan, doors, mirrors, wheels, everything.” If the car needed a little work before, it needs a complete overhaul now.

When Sim tried to ask the truck driver for his money back, the man ran off. “I filed a police report,” said Sim, adding that there were two witnesses. “The cops were very helpful and sympathetic,” he said. “At a certain point, we all started laughing on HOW RIDICULOUS THIS IS.”

Clearly his surprise didn’t go according to plan, but here’s hoping Sim has enough car knowledge to repair the damage the not-so-friendly truck driver did to the poor vintage Cadillac.
