The annual J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study is something of a linchpin for automakers upon which they can hinge both the perception of their brand and the viability of their older vehicles in a crowded marketplace. The 2014 installment has proven particularly successful for GMC and the three GMC vehicles ranked most dependable in their respective segments.

The 2011 Sierra 1500, Sierra 2500 HD, and Yukon each topped their segments as the Best Large Light Duty Pickup, Best Large Heavy Duty Pickup, and Best Large CUV, respectively. As with every year, the 2014 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study accounts for all reported problems occurring during the past twelve months by those who own three-year-old vehicles (in this case, 2011 model year vehicles). Vehicles and brands are ranked according to the number of problems that occur per every 100 vehicles.

According to J.D. Power’s press release, GMC vehicles perform at the industry average of 133 problems reported per vehicle, making them a superior brand to rivals such as Ford, Ram, and Jeep. When it comes to the class-topping Sierra 1500, Sierra HD, and Yukon, GMC tops both its sibling brand Chevrolet and Toyota.

Additionally, the second-to-last iteration of the GMC Canyon (before the 2015 refresh that is) took third in the Midsize Pickup category.

“The momentum continues at GMC with this recognition,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick and GMC marketing, in a press release. “Sierra, our highest-volume vehicle, now has its entire line of trucks ranked as the most dependable.

“Our all-new 2015 Sierra HD and 2015 Yukon full-size SUV have begun hitting dealerships, and we look to build that momentum in 2015.”
